This world is full of injustice. I paid the full air fare for flying from New Delhi to New York. My weight is 70 kgs. The gentleman sitting next to me, almost bursting out of the seat belt, must be weighing about 200 kgs. He has also paid the same amount. Is this not injustice? Why obese people are given this preferential treatment?

All said in good humor! The obese people are to be pitied rather than condemned. They know not what they are doing- how much they are eating. To say it in clear cut terms obesity is extending a direct invitation to diabetes. Not very long ago, diabetes caught hold of the elderly and the aged. Now even the children suffer from diabetes, not the rarest of the rare cases, but quite a good percentage. It is increasing at a rapid pace.

The reason is not far off to seek. The modern mothers think that the easiest way to handle the children is to fulfill their all demands. The chocolates, the pizzas, the salty chips, cold drinks, the processed foods and what not!

The concept of right diet is not known to the children, but even the mothers wish to pretend ignorance, even if they know. Their placement of love for the children is wrong. Soon the children look like balloons and one fine day, when the doctor tells you that your kid has diabetes, you are shocked…How that can be…?

Various studies reveal that over 20 % of the world population is obese. You suffer, and you pass on this heritage to your children. You spend the whole day sitting at the office, with mental labor, without any physical labor and once you enter the house, tired and exhausted, you refuse to go out of the drawing room. Changing the channels, by push of the remote button is only your physical exercise.

‘Doing nothing is not an option’ they say. ‘In 1989 a study found that five per cent of children were classified as obese. By 1998, the figure had almost doubled. The incidence of obesity is also increasing with age; according to an English survey in 1996, approximately 17 per cent of 15 year olds are obese,’ says Dr Penny Gibson, Consultant Paediatrician and Adviser on childhood obesity for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

There is conclusive proof that obesity is one of the strongest causes of diabetes. Unless something tangible steps are taken all over the World, by premium Organizations like World Health Organization, the day is not far off, when we shall have diabetic families, from the child to the grandfather!

Causes of Overweight and Obesity - A Guide Especially for Obese People The cases of obesity have been increasing dramatically over the last years. The reason for this is founded in the changing lifestyle of people as well as their habit of eating. Almost all obese people want to know whether they can control the causes of overweight and obesity. And above all how! Therefore let us categorize the causes in two parts. On one side the genetic causes which you obviously can’t control, on the other hand the environmental causes which you can affect positively. This guide is written in order to give you starting points to control the environmental causes. I will also provide you with tips which you can put into practice immediately.

Let us start with a widely spread cause of overweight and obesity: Less consumption of energy. The reason why performing exercises is very important in order to burn fat is your metabolic rate. An increased metabolic rate results in an increased fat metabolism. That allows you to burn fat automatically. Performing an exercise increases your metabolic rate for several hours. I highly recommend that you take advantage from this effect and practice an exercise of your choice. It’s really important that you grasp the significant meaning of your metabolic rate. Now that you know why you should work out, let’s discuss performing exercises in detail.

As an obese person it’s very important to start with a limited extent and step up permanently but slowly. I suggest that you start with 3 workouts for at 15 to 20 minutes per week. This will give you a good start. Increase the duration of your workout every week for 2 minutes. After 6 weeks you are performing at least 30 minutes at a stretch. There is no need to practice longer than 30 to 45 minutes. Workouts between 30 to 45 minutes are enough in order to stimulate your metabolic rate sufficiently. Now increase the quantity of your workouts week by week. Step up to one workout per day.

Here are some examples of great exercises: Cycling, Swimming, Climbing Machine, Incline or Power Walking or any Circuit Training with weights. Choose one of your favorite workouts and make sure you have no problems to perform it. Now that we have discussed the expenditure of energy as one of the main causes of overweight and obesity, let’s review the habit of eating.

Another one of the plausible causes of overweight and obesity is, needless to say, your habit of eating. Simple sugar and trans fatty acids are the two main thickeners. These two ingredients are primarily included in the following food products: sweets and biscuits, jam, cakes, ice cream, crackers, candies, pastries, puddings, cookies, fried foods, salad dressings and many processed foods. Avoid these food products or reduce them at least to a minimum. Reduce the ingestion in the evening, especially the intake of carbohydrates. I highly recommend that you get into the way to read the list of ingredients on the package, before you buy any food product. Also, you should drink a lot of water, at least 3 liters per day. Last but not least: Split your meals into 5 smaller portions instead the usual 3. Every time you ingest food to your body your metabolic rate is boosting a little bit.

Now that you have read this guide you probably approach things in a new way. Specifically performing exercises, avoiding high caloric food products and eating 5 smaller portions per day are major points in order to control the causes of overweight and obesity. There is, of course, much more helpful information concerning weight loss, e.g. information on diets. But by putting this information into practice you will be able to control the causes and lose weight.

What Parents Can Do to Fight Obesity in Children

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re well aware of the huge coverage in the media, especially television, regarding the rapidly growing rate of obesity in children. Even more painfully obvious is the fact that although our presumed awareness has increased, the actions taken to address this issue have not.

The phrase "you are what you eat" is painfully true, especially when dealing with obesity in children. So, if the assumption is made that as parents or adults, our awareness of the problem is there, then why aren’t we seeing a decrease in obesity in children rather than the reverse? The truth is, children don’t do the weekly shopping for groceries, and they don’t cook the meals. So where is the food coming from? Who is the person responsible for bringing the food into the home? Children will eat what is available and they will no doubt scream if they don’t get all the fast food and junk food they desire, but who is the parent and who is running the show? Obesity in children is a serious issue that can and will cause health issues for these young people.

Portions served in Asia and Europe are considerably smaller and the results are obvious. If you find yourself at a fast food outlet and the kids are screaming, now’s the time for compromise. Get the smaller servings or share the servings between a couple of them. Be sure to avoid the sugared drinks and this includes fruit juices. Even though they are low in fat and sugar does not contain fat, sugar is stored as fat if not burned up with exercise.

Encourage the kids to eat slower. Perhaps engage them in conversation over the meal so they slow down. By eating at a slower pace, it give the brain time to get the message from the stomach that it is in fact full.

What About Between Meals?

Let’s face it; kids can be bottomless pits when it comes to satisfying their appetites. It may seem difficult at first, but keeping the junk food out of the house is a good place to start. If it can’t be avoided, then only have small amounts in the house at any one time and perhaps only allow them once a day or every other day as a treat. Many people suggest more fat free choices but if they are manufactured food, then what is usually done is more sugar is added o help the flavor and this can in fact be worse than the normal fat. Natural, unprocessed food should always be the first choice. Fruit and veggies, already cut up and ready for the kids to grab is very handy and kids will get used to it. Activity is the name of the game. Having an electronic babysitter in the form of TV, computer and video games, although sometimes unavoidable for your sanity, really can contribute to obesity in children. If they don’t want to go outside and play, or do sports, then compromise and put in video games that are activity oriented, like learning to hiphop or learn other dances. Even exercise videos can be fun. Instead of driving to places that are within walking distance, walk. This provides good exercise and gets the children outside in the fresh air.

New Nutrition Standards Could Help To Curb Rising Obesity Rates In Children

The prevalence of junk food in our schools has undoubtedly been fuelling the problem of rising obesity rates in children. Hopefully, however, a newly published report will finally put a stop to the ready availability of junk food in our schools.

Schools have long been considered to be a major contributor to the problem of rising obesity rates in children as there have been no regulations governing the food provided in school cafeterias or through the ubiquitous school snack bars or vending machines.

This may be about to change however following the publication of a report, compiled at the urging of Congress, entitled ‘Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools: Leading the Way to Healthier Youth’. The report was written by the Institute of Medicine and The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the past twenty years we have seen a very significant increase in the problem of overweight in our children with the prevalence of overweight more than doubling among 6 to 11 year olds, from 7% to nearly 19%, and rising from just 5% to over 17% for teenagers.

At the same time obesity rates in children are also rising alarmingly and it has been felt for many years that the ready availability of high calorie, low nutrition foods in schools, while not in itself causing the problem, is certainly a major contributory factor.

In 2006 a first step was taken on the road to improving the health of school children when local education agencies were required to develop wellness policies and, while this is still in its infancy and progress in developing such policies has been patchy, it is intended that the latest nutrition guidelines should be bolted onto these policies and, hopefully, speed the progress of their completion and implementation.

The report is based upon the division of food into two tiers. The first tier contains foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grain foods and non-fat or low-fat dairy products. The second tier contains foods which are not covered in the first tier and which are considered to be acceptable in limited quantities. These foods include such things as baked potato chips and low-sodium wheat crackers.

Based upon these two tiers, the report details a lengthy and comprehensive list of standards which all schools will be required to comply with. Only time will tell just how affective these new standards will prove to be but there can be little doubt that anything we can do to curb rising obesity rate in children warrants our full support.
