Diabetes Care for Men and Women

Diabetes is a disease that requires special care and treatment as it can affect anyone of any age group…

Diabetes is a disease that can affect people of any age. You have to live with diabetes and there is no cure for it. Diabetes is directly related to the insulin level in the body. Depending on the secretion and absorption of insulin, the level and effect of diabetes will differ. It is a chronic disease and the reasons may be anything from hereditary to consumption of unbalanced diet. Around 171 million people in the world are found to be diabetic.

Sugar is an essential factor in the blood that gives energy for the body. This sugar is obtained from the food that we eat. Insulin secreted in the pancreas gland is responsible for absorption of blood glucose by the body cells. When the production of insulin is insufficient, then more sugar will stay in the blood and the cells will starve of fuel. If insulin is produced more, the blood glucose will be consumed more and again cells will get tired wanting fuel for further activities. If any of these occurs, then the person is said to be diabetic.

Types of diabetes
There are 3 main types of diabetes. To treat diabetes, you must first know what type of diabetes has affected you.

Gestational diabetes - this starts in the pregnancy and the level of glucose in the blood will be higher. After delivering the baby, this type of diabetes will go away. But even after delivery the mother has to be monitored.

Type 1 diabetes - This is diagnosed in children and young adults. In this type, sufficient insulin will not be produced by the pancreas. Those who suffer from type1 diabetes have to take insulin for the entire life. Nowadays, insulin injections are common and after taking insulin the person can be very normal.

Type 2 diabetes - this is diagnosed in people at the later ages. Due to insufficient nutrition, the insulin is not secreted upto the required level or the cells don’t absorb insulin. As a result, glucose accumulates in the blood and lead to diabetes.

Symptoms
The symptoms of diabetes are similar for both men and women. There are some cases where people are found to be diabetic even if they don’t have any of these symptoms. Diabetes will show symptoms after the depletion of 80% of insulin producing cells. The typical symptoms include

  • Sudden weight loss
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive hunger
  • Lethargy
  • Wounds in the feet

Many people in the world test for diabetes only when they find wounds that are not healed for a long time in their foot.

Treatment
The only treatment for diabetes is to take nutritional balanced diet, insulin tablets and injections. There is no cure and to prolong life after diagnosing diabetes, the patient must take sufficient insulin that is required to burn the sugar that is produced. The diabetic patients must regularly visit the doctor and check for the sugar levels in the blood. Diet control and regular exercises must be followed to control diabetes.

Care for men and women
Since diabetes affects people of all ages and races, we must take proper care so that we burn up extra sugar in the blood. In certain cases, the blood sugar was under control just by controlling the diet. You must take balanced diet that contains carbohydrates, necessary fat, proteins and minerals. Avoid all fried items and all oils. Exercises are a must to avoid diabetes. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always good for health. Generally women are found to be less aware of diabetes. It is now a myth that women live longer than men.

When a person is affected by diabetes, he/she is prone to many diseases as their immune system becomes weakened. If diabetes is not treated properly, it may lead to heart diseases and kidney failures. Many people also suffer from eye sight problems and nervous problems. Diabetes is a silent killer but if you know how to fight against it, you can conquer the disease and lead a normal life.

Soaring Diabetes Rates May Bring Wave of Childbirth Problems

Number of pregnant women with diabetes more than doubles in six years, according to health survey

The number of pregnant women with diabetes has more than doubled in six years, according to one of the largest health surveys of expectant mothers. Doctors fear the rise will lead to a greater risk of miscarriages, stillbirths and babies with serious birth defects. Children born to diabetic women are more likely to develop diabetes themselves.

Doctors examined 175,249 women who gave birth in 11 hospitals between 1999 and 2005 and found significant jumps in pre-pregnancy diabetes in every age, racial and ethnic group.

In the youngest group studied, aged 13 to 19, diabetes rose fivefold, while it doubled among women aged 20 to 39. Women aged 40 and older showed a 40% increase in diabetes over the same time period.

Doctors believe the rise reflects the sharp increase in type 2 diabetes, which is driven by soaring rates of obesity. The study found that cases of gestational diabetes, a temporary condition which usually abates after childbirth, remained steady at 8%.

"In the US and worldwide, we’re seeing an increase in type-2 diabetes. It used to be considered adult-onset diabetes, with diagnosis in the 40s, but we’re seeing it in children as young as age 10," said Jean Lawrence, of Kaiser Permanente, a California-based non-profit health foundation which runs 32 hospitals. The study appears in the journal Diabetes Care.

Women with diabetes are seven times more likely to have a stillborn baby than healthy women, while those with type-2 diabetes are twice as likely to miscarry and five times more likely to have a baby with birth defects compared with women with type-1 diabetes, according to two studies by British scientists this year.

Libby Dowling, care adviser for Diabetes UK, said: "The health risks to mother and baby are well known. However, many of the risks can be reduced with good blood glucose control before and during pregnancy. Good diabetes control can only be achieved if women receive pre-conceptual counseling and access to specialist [NHS] services during their pregnancy."

How can Flaxseeds Help with Diabetes?

Diabetes is a very debilitating disease brought on by many factors. One of the factors is an excess of saturated and trans fats in our diet. Another potential factor is a deficiency of LNAs . Changing our diets to include Flaxseeds, which contains alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) or omega-3, may help with our fight against diabetes.

Diabetes is a very debilitating disease that is caused by many different factors. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 (juvenile) and type 2 (adult-onset) of this disease. There are also other subforms of it such as gestational diabetes.

What Causes Diabetes?

How this disease is cause depends on the type of the disease. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that generally strikes before the age of 20. This disease is caused when for a reason still not pinpointed by doctors, a person’s immune system starts attacking the cells in the pancreas that produce beta cells. These beta cells are what notify person’s body of when to use glucose and how much to use. A person that has type 1 of this disease therefore has difficulty regulating their body’s glucose levels because of this disease. There is still no cure for type 1 of this disease.

Individuals that are afflicted with type 2 diabetes generally fall prey to this disease when they are adults. This disease is more likely when people have several contributing factors present. Type 2 of this disease’s contributing factors include smoking, drinking excessively, obesity, family history, and being a part of certain ethnic backgrounds. Type 2 of this disease can generally be reduced in severity and even cured if a person adjusts certain bad habits such as eating a better diet and quitting smoking.

Gestational diabetes affects pregnant women that generally have many of the same contribute factors that individuals with type 2 of this disease have. However, women with gestational diabetes generally do not experience this disease after they are no longer pregnant. However, women that have had gestational diabetes in the past are far more likely to have it in any future pregnancies as well.

Diabetes and Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds and flax seed oil can be potentially be helpful in treating this disease. This is due to the fact that flax seed oil may actually have the ability to help stabilize blood sugar levels (glucose). While this does not necessarily treat the cause of the disease, it can lessen the severity of it. This property of flax seed oil is still being researched and has yet to be proven by scientists.

Individuals considering purchasing flaxseeds or flax seed oil to help with their diabetes should consult their doctor first. This will help consumers avoid potentially negative side effects they may experience on flax seed oil or if flax seed oil does not react well with many of their current medications. They can also discuss with their doctor whether or not the potential benefits of flax seed oil outweigh the potential risks.

Diabetes Prevention: Consistent High Quality Sleep Is Key

One of the ways to prevent Type 2 diabetes is to get regular, high quality sleep. For most people that is easier said than done, however, there are ways to learn how to sleep deeply and consistently, as detailed in this article.

Diabetes is a major and constantly growing problem in this country, and like many other health problems, it can be entirely preventable. One of the things that can help combat diabetes is regular, high quality sleep – the kind of sleep that allows your body to rest and restore itself, leading to optimal health.

On the other hand, consistent sleep problems and sleep deprivation have the opposite effect – on diabetes prevention and overall health.

A sleep study conducted at the University of Chicago found that even young healthy volunteers became pre-diabetic after only six days of restricted sleep. The volunteers were permitted to sleep only four hours a night during those six days; as a consequence, they became abnormally hungry due to a drop in leptin levels, a hormone that tells your brain when you are full. Because of their findings, it is believed that a lack of sleep may result in an increase of the likelihood of diabetes, as well as contributing significantly to obesity.

Furthermore, a study performed by the American Diabetes Society found that otherwise healthy and young individuals who typically slept fewer than 6.5 hours per night had a greater insulin resistance than those who slept between 7.5 and 8.5 hours on average. Clearly, there is an unfortunate connection between diabetes and sleep disorders – and often those who suffer from sleep disorders are at a higher risk for developing diabetes, or they are already afflicted by the disease.

Since getting a good night’s sleep is often easier said than done, the Speed Sleep products are there to help – by allowing you to get a good night’s sleep without drugs or other sleep aids, and therefore helping you maintain optimal health and stay in the best possible physical condition.

Natural Prevention Of Diabetes

Prevention is always better than cure. Many of the known diseases as diabetes can always be prevented at very little cost, if it is going to be measured against the amount spent in treatment. This article incidentally is based on the wisdom of achieving a healthy life by avoiding the factors that can compel you to seek the help of a doctor. I will dedicate the paragraphs below to discuss each of these principles in full detail.

Adopt good eating habits

We live in a day and age in which junk foods have covered over eighty percent of the shelves of all the known fast food joints. The pressures of our daily activities hardly leave us with any time to responsibly consider what we consume as food. Eating to fill the stomach or grasping anything that looks palatable should not be the deciding factor in your choice of food. Good food should contain a good balance of all relevant nutrients in the right proportions to ensure that after digestion and absorption the body system will derive what it needs to keep it functioning at optimum capacity.

In addition, food should be prepared and consumed under the highest standards of hygiene. This means, where possible vegetables and groceries that are vulnerable to contact from an endless list of pathogens should be properly cleaned before consumption.

As far as practicable, it is recommended that the fat and cholesterol content of our diets should be at the lowest level possible. The connection between high cholesterol in the human system and the vulnerability to cardiovascular diseases has being established beyond thought.

Obesity

In recent times due to poor nutritional information, people consume large quantities of food rich in calories, which the body is unable to use. Examples of such food include, candies, chocolates, sweet cookies, ice creams and a host of others. The human body through its own internal mechanism absorbs just the exact quantity of glucose needed to meet the energy demands of the system. Surplus glucose is converted into fats and stored under the skin layer. Fats pose a mortal danger to the human system when it blocks major vessels and arteries to impede the smooth distribution of blood from the heart to other parts of the body and back to the heart. People suffering from obesity should subscribe to a workable weight loss program, which can begin by getting more nutrition education coupled with the resolve to diligently endeavor to exhibit greater responsibility in matters regarding their diets. Finally, conscious efforts should be put in place to avoid reaching to a state of obesity.

Increase physical activity

Our modern world is driven by mechanization and technology to such an extent that it is increasingly becoming easier to do the very basic things in life with just very little or no effort at all. Inasmuch as the modern gadgets exist to enhance the human welfare, in their extreme stages can bring side effects that are costly to the health of man. As a mater of principle, it is advised that, engaging in regular physical activities such as jogging, walking, swimming etc enable the skeletal and muscular system to be set to work. As these systems work, the energy demand by the body cells to keep pace with the said physical activity, results in the burning of excess glucose stored as fats and increase in blood circulation. As this process becomes a regular routine, then you are reducing your vulnerability to cardiovascular diseases by a significant margin.

Quit unhealthy habits

Alcohol and substance use and their abuse is a major threat to a healthy living. Tobacco as a single entity is known to contain thousands of chemicals; chiefly among them is nicotine that undermines the quality of life a person can live. Statistically, over fifty thousand people globally die from tobacco related complications such as respiratory diseases and cancer every year. People addicted to the more dangerous illicit substances as cocaine and marijuana are known to have an over seventy-five percent likelihood of suffering from mental diseases than non-drug users. Closely related to the drug menace is alcoholism and its attendant social and health problems. Regular alcohol intake puts a strain on the liver, which if allowed to persist can result in serious and even terminal liver infections.

When it comes to matters concerning your health, you cannot afford to make any compromise.

Diabetes and Stevia: Sweetness Without Spiking

Can the sweetener Stevia be used if you have diabetes?

Diabetes and Stevia: Sweetness Without Spiking Food sweetness is one of the fundamental pleasures of eating. It is a pleasure that in America equates to an annual consumption of 120 pounds of sugar per year. The consequences of these sweet indulgences are obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. As awareness grows, more and more people are turning to sugar substitutes to avoid the calories of sugar while retaining the sweetness.

One popular sugar substitute is aspartame (NutraSweet). Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar. However, it increases cravings for carbohydrates, which in turn causes weight gain. Diabetics are particularly susceptible to aspartame, making the blood sugar more difficult to control.

Yet there is a sweetener that is natural and actually works to stabilize blood sugars. That sweetener is stevia. Stevia is a perennial shrub native to Paraguay and has been used for centuries in South America. Also known as dulce yerba and honey leaf, it is 300 times sweeter than sugar cane.

For the last twenty years, stevia has commanded a higher and higher market share of sweeteners in Japan, Korea and China. Stevia cannot legally be sold in the United States as a sweetener, however it is sold as a dietary supplement. Yet American companies such as CocaCola are using stevia in their products in Japan, China and Korea.

A natural sugar substitute, stevia is not absorbed through the digestive tract and is non-caloric. In addition studies show that stevia may lower blood pressure and prevent or even reverse diabetes.

Stevia can be obtained in health food stores and over the Internet in both powder and liquid forms. It is easily used to sweeten coffee, tea, cereal and sauces, but becomes more problematic as a substitute in baked goods. However given its desirable outcomes, a little experimentation and a good stevia cookbook can ease the transition.

Diabetes and obesity are on the increase due largely to two important factors: lack of exercise and sugar. Making a good choice for a sugar substitute is the first step on the road to a healthier society.

How to Survive to Diabetes

Diabetes is closely linked with cardiovascular disease and the majority of them also suffer from high blood pressure. Obesity is the most important factor in getting diabetes. Using natural supplements can help Diabetes to ensure proper blood sugar levels.

How to Survive to Diabetes Diabetes is a disorder which affects the body’s ability to use insulin properly. People with diabetes are not able to produce insulin or enough insulin. Insulin is important as it controls the amount of sugar in the blood and the rate of glucose in the cells. Glucose produces energy and the food for our brains which is essential to maintain a good health . According to the American Diabetes Association there are around 18 million Americans suffering from Diabetes. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 only affect around 8% of the total population of diabetes. People with this type of diabetes usually have it in early stage of life. Their pancreas cannot produce insulin at all. They are considered Insulin-Dependent and they have to take insulin for life. This situation could have been cause by a virus. There is now no scientific cure for Type 1 Diabetes. We won’t , in this paper, deal with Type 1 Diabetes .

TYPE 2 DIABETES

Type 2 Diabetes usually occurs around the middle-age and is the most common with around 90% of the total population of Diabetes.Their pancreas don’t produce enough quantities of insulin. There is a new phenomenon, that is an increasing number of young people developing Type 2 Diabetes. This is linked to the rates of obesity among younger age category of the population. This is becoming a social and political issue since obesity is the biggest factor in getting diabetes and obesity is considered also to be linked with sixty different diseases. The big concern is that when blood sugar is not maintained at a proper level, complications will surface. High blood sugar levels can lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and nerve damage.Their pancreas don’t produce enough quantities of insulin. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead also to cardiovascular disease and it is more likely that patients with diabetes have greater chances to contract cardiovascular disease and the majority of them also suffer from high blood pressure.

STEPS TO CURE YOUR DIABETES
If you suspect to have diabetes, and you have a family history of diabetes, and you are overweight, it is imperative that you consult health professionals in order to measure your levels of glucose in the blood. There are some symptoms like loss of libido, chronic fatigue, wounds not healing normally, blurred vision, excessive urination that are also very good signals.People with controlled diabetes can live a normal life. The first step is to examine your eating habits and determine which foods should be avoided and which ones would be more appropriate for your situation. Some changes in lifestyle , exercise on a regular basis and an appropriate healthy diet should be undertaken. It would be beneficial to remove toxins from your body and undertake a good body cleansing program since now we are living in a very toxic world. The second step would be losing extra weight because as mentioned above obesity is the most important factor in getting diabetes. The third step would be to get some natural supplements to stabilize and decrease your blood sugar levels but always consult a health professional before replacing your medications.

Using natural supplements can help you to ensure proper blood sugar levels and to stay healthy for a long time. If you revise your lifestyle, there will a time that extra insulin and medication will not be needed any more. Take action now to live a better, healthier and happier life.

Child Obesity and Its Variety of Problems

There is a drastic rise in childhood obesity since past few years, if it goes unchecked for few more years then it could be very harmful. The advent of technology has given birth to many harmful effects especially on the health of young children either directly or indirectly. Computers and video games and many other entertaining e-devices have taken the place of many out-door healthy activities.

Harmful effects of obesity

Asthma :
It has been reported in American Journal of ‘Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine’ that nearly 28% of young girls aged between 9-26 suffering from asthma are due to overweight. The exactly reason is still unclear but it might be due to gain in fat during puberty. Boys too develop asthma but there appears no correlation between asthma and obesity.

Diabetes :
Type 2 diabetes has become increasingly come in young children. While majority of the children have genetic factors which make them more susceptible to this disease. It is the presence of excess fatty tissue which reduces the efficiency of insulin. Insulin is responsible for converting glucose in to energy. As a result pancreas work hard to produce more insulin and eventually may wear out causing ‘diabetes’.

Gallstone :
Presence of stones in gall bladder is associated with obesity in adults. While it is not as common a condition in adolescents, as many as 50% of cases with cholelithiasis in children are associated with obesity.

Cardiovascular disease :
Poor eating habits and subsequent overweight leads to higher level of blood cholesterol in young children. Atherosclerosis, the most common type of heart disease which leads to premature death in young adults. Blood pressure also rises due to obesity which puts additional strain on the heart.

Early Maturation :
Obesity can bring early development of puberty in girls. This can increase the likelihood of menstrual irregularities. Early onset of puberty is also associated with fat distribution in upper body especially in the abdomen- this is known to be higher vascular risk factor.

Sleeping Problem :
As many as 7% of obese children have sleep apnea, a sleep disturbance where there are intervals of cessation of breathing lasting 10 seconds or more. During this period the level of oxygen in blood falls making the condition life threatening. At the very least it causes restlessness at night and difficulty in being able to stay alert in daytime. This can interfere with performance in school or work.

Orthopedic Problem :
A variety of problems affecting bones, joints, hip, muscles of the feet can occur with obesity.

There are other psychological problems as well with kids who are teased about their size. Because they are seldom able to move fast as others.

As you have seen till now there are variety of problems associated with obesity. Some experts believe if current child obesity epidemic is left unchecked it will reduce the life expectancy in the coming years.
